There’s something timeless about a train ride to Kandy that unveils Sri Lanka’s heartland in all its lush glory. As the journey begins, the landscape unfolds like a slow-moving painting; lush paddy fields, swaying coconut palms, and life full villages drifting by. But it’s after Rambukkana that the true magic begins: the train starts its gentle climb, winding through misty hills and emerald valleys, where warmer lowland breezes give way to a refreshing coolness in the hill country. Nearing Kadugannawa, the majestic silhouette of Bible Rock (Bathalegala) rises into view.

Outside your window, the world transforms into a living postcard, plantations draping the slopes, thick forest patches giving way to breathtaking clearings, and distant mountain silhouettes stretching into the horizon. The rhythmic clatter of the tracks, paired with the soft rustle of the wind, makes each bend a new revelation of the island’s rich tapestry.

For those journeying to The Lone Pine, your stop depends on the train you choose. If you’re on the morning 7 a.m. Intercity Express (Train No. 1009), it stops at Sarasavi Uyana—the closest station to The Lone Pine. Booking a seat in the A/C observation cabin is recommended, with reservations opening one month in advance. Ride-hailing options like Uber or PickMe are available from the station, with fares around LKR 500. All other trains do not stop at Sarasavi Uyana, so it’s best to disembark at Peradeniya Station, just a short drive from our serene hillside retreat.

This train ride to Kandy is more than just a commute; it’s an integral part of the adventure, offering a dynamic glimpse into Sri Lanka’s tropical splendor long before you arrive at your peaceful destination.
